A Room Full of #Compers! The London #Competitors’ Club, aka The LCC.

What is the one thing you will NEVER be able to win in a competition?  I will leave you to ponder that for a moment.

For years I’ve been intrigued about comping groups, days where compers get together to discuss there hobby, exchange entry forms, and generally have a bit of fun.  Well back in March I attended my first ever meeting of The LCC, (London Competitors’ Club).

Spotting a tweet out about the day from the very lovely Jane Willis, also an avid comper whom many of you will know from her grapevine blog, I decided to try it out.

A room full of compers at the LCC.

So, did you make a guess?  What is the one thing compers can NEVER win?

Well ‘time’ of course!  Although I have truly wished for more hours in the day over the past few months.  I’ve moved to a new area, embarked on a different career, and am (still)! redecorating.  Comping and blogging have sadly taken a back seat.  But I thought I’d write a post about this experience as coming up on Saturday 28th June 2014 will be another meeting.

I had no idea what to expect at all when I attended the last one, but I was immediately greeted by friendly faces and guided through the day by the more experienced members.  We had a number of fun quizzes, an opportunity to exchange entry forms, a raffle, tea and cake – and of course opportunity to exchange winning experiences.  I went from nervously attending to having lots of fun within the space of 5 minutes, so I am duly converted and keenly looking forward to the next meet up!

For further information please visit The London Competitors’ Club website.

The LCC isn’t closed to those people living in London, it is open to anyone who wishes to attend.  I saw it as an opportunity for a day out in the big smoke and cheekily before the meeting squeezed in a visit to the Ideal Home Exhibition.  (I had of course won tickets)!  I was again a first time attendee, and again would love to return.  Here I am with a couple of bargains I snapped up.

Well I had better get back to the decorating!  But hope this post has inspired you to search for a comping group in your local area.  Like everything in life, comping is best enjoyed with friends. Be lucky x

Winspiration: Busy moving home so less #Competition #Wins, but no dry spell yet….. fingers crossed!

The last few weeks have been very chaotic as myself and Mr Wills have been moving home.  The place we moved to needs a lot of work, not heavy duty building.  But everything needs a good scrub and (more than a few) licks of paint!  I’m feeling in a ‘nesting’ mood as I have in my life been inclined to be a little nomadic, so I’m very busy trying to source just the right pieces of furniture at the right price.  This is William settling in on the new leather corner sofa, purchased from a private seller on Gumtree for just £250.  Bargain!

William settling in nicely!

William settling in nicely!

So my apologies for the lack of posts during this busy time in my life.  Luckily I haven’t hit a dry spell yet, even though I’ve only been comping for one or two hours a week since the move.  I think my hard work and extra hours before is carrying me through!  The biggest value prize since my last winspiration post was 2 tickets to the opera and a signed limited edition print worth £300.  I also had one of those rare, but extremely welcome days, when the wins just keep coming.  It was the week before my radio interview.  Three wins from twitter: A £40 Voucher to spend at Giraffe, a beautiful bracelet from Beaverbrooks – also worth £40, and £50 in vouchers to spend in a local shopping centre…… and then on facebook: A breakfast in bed hamper, (muffins, jams, teas, coffee etc), from Bishops Move worth £30.  So a very good day, wish all comping days were like that!

On Instagram the very next morning I had a fab win of a pair of GHDs worth £145.  My other wins since the last post have been smaller items.  But I’m still very happy this year, I’ve already reached over £2500 in prize value with over 9 months of comping left, woo hoo!

If you read my blog regularly you will know that experiences are prizes that especially appeal to me.  I enjoy doing ‘different’ things, seeing new places, eating lovely food, and often being inspired.  From a simple RT on twitter over the Christmas Advent period I won a Falconry experience for two at Coniston Hotel, in a very beautiful part of the world near Skipton.  The prize was especially appealing as it included lunch to the value of £50.

Falconry Experience & Lunch at Coniston Hotel near Skipton.

I had no idea what to expect on the day, (except cold weather which didn’t let me down)!  But I had the most fabulous time.  I learned about the birds from a very experienced guide, and we got to handle an Owl, Harris Hawk…….. and a Golden Eagle.  I think we were very lucky as this isn’t normally part of the day.  There were a mixture of people on the experience, some who were thinking of taking up falconry, to others like myself who really just wanted to get closer to a bird of prey than normally allows.  I have to say I was a bit nervous when the Eagle, (with a wing span of 6ft), swooped down at me.  But afterwards I felt exhilarated.

If you do the experience please remember to wrap up warm.  Standing out on a hillside for a few hours, in the English Countryside, in March, is freezing!  But when the eagle landed it was soon forgotten, and then we headed off to spend our £50 on lunch.  The hotel was superbly furnished with a splendid view in the dining room.  We were led to a reserved table, and have to say the food and service could not be faulted.  It was really a great day.  And yes I did have a starter, main AND dessert!

I hope this post gives you winning inspiration.  Please do share with me your wins on facebook, twitter or even instagram…..  its great to hear your winning ways also!

How do you define a professional #comper? Is there such a thing as a professional #competition enterer?

In a previous post I asked, can you make a living from entering competitions?  At the end of that post I made the bold statement;  There is no such thing as a professional comper!  I know many will disagree with this so here is my justification, (and do remember folks everyone can have their own opinion, it doesn’t mean someone is right and someone else is wrong).

Depending on which dictionary you use there are a number of different definitions as to what ‘professional’ means, but this short statement sums it up for me;

“Engaged in a specified activity as one’s main paid occupation rather than as an amateur”

Most people I know who are highly successful in winning put the hours in that would be equivalent to a part, or even full time position.  But they still don’t earn enough to pay the mortgage or rent every month of the year.  They may earn in value thousands and thousands of pounds.  But that can’t always be converted into the actual cash that is needed in your account to pay for the mortgage and bills.  Another guaranteed income stream is generally funding that, with ‘comping’ as a nice bonus.  Competitions can provide a way for a family on a modest income to have a few luxuries in life.  As per the definition above, if you can not rely solely on comping to be your main paid occupation then to me this means you are not a professional comper.  (And is why I dislike the term so much)!

I've been on the radio talking about competitions, but I don't class myself as professional - comping doesn't pay my bills!

I’ve been on the radio talking about competitions, but I don’t class myself as professional – comping doesn’t pay my bills!

However, I do believe (and know) there are people out there that make a living from association with competitions.  There are magazine subscriptions, online services, even blogs(!) out there.  Some generate money for the people behind them, those who put the hard work and hours in to make an income.  But to me if someone publishs’ a magazine for a living then wouldn’t they be a professional publisher?  They may be a highly skilled comper as well, but it is the activity of publishing that is there ‘main paid occupation’.  Food for thought!

The idea behind this post came about because I recently saw a national company include in their competition t&c’s, no professional compers allowed to enter!  Its a term that has always frustrated me a little, so I wanted to examine it.  My conclusion from both postings, (can you make a living from entering competitions, and this post), is that there is no such thing as a professional comper.  Personally I’m just well practised, or good at my hobby – I should be after almost 15 years!  What are your thoughts?  Do you like the term professional?  If not, what do you prefer?

Winspiration: Its all about Twitter with the #Competition #Wins, & I did get a Valentines meal after all!

Well, even though I’m a comping addict, I have to say I am glad the never ending Valentines day competitions are just about over.  Being a singleton seeing so many hearts and flowers, and asking day after day to talk about how I met my partner, had worn a little thin.  My (non-comping) best friend is also highly relieved.  She was tagged so much I’m told she had to have her phone constantly on charge!  But having had a little moan I still managed to enjoy a Valentines night out.  I spotted a local competition for a Valentines meal package worth £70.  It was on facebook and only had 2 entries, well I just couldn’t stop myself as usual.  So my mum and I had quite a chuckle to ourselves and had a lovely evening with fabulous food, we had a trio of desserts to share that honestly were to die for.

I have copied and pasted below all the wins I have had since my last Winspiration post in January.  As you can see its definitely Twitter leading the way for me producing most wins.

The Ragdale Hall Spa Day for 2 is my favourite win of this batch, its a place I have hoped to visit for some time, (and it has a value of £174)!  But honestly I’m so pleased with all my wins to date.  I’ve been putting extra hours in and it has paid off, with my winning total now at almost £2000.  I hope the rest of 2014 continues to be so kind to me.  I had another Pinterest win from Superbreak which was great as I’ve only been creating boards for a couple of months.  The prize was a suitcase filled with travel goodies, so my mission now is to win a holiday to get good use out of them.

Is it worth giving up work to enter #Competitions? Can you make a living from entering #Giveaways?

As a successful comper for almost 15 years, I’ve often been asked why I don’t give up work and concentrate on entering competitions.  But can you make a living from comping?  Can you earn enough from giveaways and promotions to not go to work?

The short answer to this is NO!

I’m sure there may be people out there who would argue this point, as always in life people have different opinions.  But these are my reasons as to why you should not set upon comping as a career, but enjoy it as a (potentially lucrative) hobby.

  • THERE IS NO GUARANTEE YOU WILL WIN – Firstly and most importantly this is what you must realise.  Yes there are ways to improve your chances, (which I share on this blog so do subscribe)!  But you can have very long dry spells even when you enter 100s of competitions daily.  The mortgage or rent still needs to be paid during these times.
  • MINIMAL CASH GIVEAWAYS – Actual real hard cash competitions are few and far between.  It is unfortunately the currency in which you need to pay your mortgage or rent.
  • RESALE VALUE – If you are a very lucky and/or hardworking comper it is likely you will win some high value prizes.  A widescreeen TV, an iPad, maybe even the compers dream of a car.  If you were to sell these items yes it would generate income, but unfortunately not the full rrp.  It is likely if you did win a fabulous prize you’d probably want to keep it for yourself anyway, (I know I do)!
  • HOLIDAYS – Many holidays (and some experiences) are non-transferable and can only be taken by the winner so resale is not allowed, and no income can be generated.  Thats fine you say, you like holidays anyway.  But imagine you’ve just had a call to say you’ve won 2 weeks in Hawaii.  You have to go straight away though, and you haven’t made enough from comping this month to pay the mortgage or rent.  If you go you will miss two weeks work of entering as well.  Its not a situation I would like to be in.
  • AN ADDICTION – Any seasoned comper will tell you entering competitions, if you are so inclined to the hobby, is highly addictive and takes over your life!  We gladly spend hours filling in our details, taking wacky photographs, and coming up with tongue-tastic tiebreakers simply because we enjoy it.  If we could make a living and give up our jobs we definitely would as we’re all a bit bonkers!

Arguably entering competitions is more about saving money than making it.  It would take time and effort to sell on and make profit from the numerous small prizes.  But winning such goods as tea-towels or toiletries saves you from buying them.  I know I’m not alone in gifting some wins which saves on birthdays and at Christmas time.  Even winning a holiday saves on that budget.

Can you make a living from entering competitions?

Can you make a living from entering competitions?

Most people I know who are highly successful in winning put the hours in that would be equivalent to a part, or even full time position.  But they still don’t earn enough to pay the mortgage or rent every month of the year.  They have another guaranteed income stream for that.  Competitions can provide a way for a family on a modest income to have a few luxuries in life, but in my personal opinion there is no such thing as a professional comper.

I hope this has given you a useful insight if you are new to entering competitions and had questions to ask.  For those seasoned compers amongst you it would be great to hear your thoughts?  I have another post planned to discuss the term ‘professional comper’, something I personally find a little irritating!

Creative #Competitions I’m entering this month! Feb 2014

You will know if you read my previous Creative Competitions post that my plan this year is to spend some time on creative, or quality competitions.  The kind that take more time to enter, but generally have less entries.  Unfortunately I didn’t win any of the competitions I featured in last months post, but I was very happy to win my first Pinterest competition.  A fabulous laptop worth £799 from Currys PC World.  I’ve had a great start to the comping year, (over £1400 of prizes so far), and as always when you win you just want to enter more, more, more!!  So here are the effort promotions I’m getting involved in this month:

Without a doubt February is definitely the month of love, with Valentines promotions all over the web.  As I’m single its actually been a bit frustrating for me, I don’t feel I should enter the ‘how did you meet your partner’ competitions.  So this twitter giveaway from Thistle Cardiff really caught my eye, they suggest Valentines Day should be about sharing the love in general……  be that for a pet, country or food!  The prize is for a stay in the hotel with dinner, breakfast, and access to the spa.  You simply need to upload a photograph to twitter of something, or someone, that you love using the hashtag #lovethistle.  On the blog it states the closing date as 5pm on Saturday 15th Feb, but on the t&c’s page it states by 5pm on Friday 14th Feb.  I actually think the prize is for the Friday night so I’d suggest uploading as soon as possible!  As you know I love my doggie so I did a montage of love for Mr Wills.

LoveWilly

William – Greek rescue dog extraordinaire

Staying with the theme of uploading photos to twitter here is a competition from One4All giftcards.  The prize is to win a £50 card, and to enter you need to upload a #Couplie to either facebook or twitter.  (You guessed correctly, a couplie is like a selfie but with 2 people in the shot)!  Again I like this competition as it doesn’t have to be you and a partner.  Entries close at 10am on Valentines Day.  I uploaded a picture of me and my best friend via twitter.

I enjoy entering photo competitions on social media.  Its fun looking back at old photos, and making new ones.  But also you get less people bother to enter, thereby increasing your chances of winning.  Some RT giveaways I’ve seen have over 1000 entries, but with a photo requirement that can drop to just 50, or even 5 for a local competition!

Pinterest seems to be the place to be for competitions at the moment, and I can hardly keep up.  (It does require some time to get boards together when you are looking for certain images to create looks).  Boden are running a fabulous promotion to win £1000 account credit which closes on the 17th February.  It won’t be a low entry competition as its open to the UK and US.  But I’m giving it a go!  My entry is here.

Another £1000 giveaway on Pinterest, (or you can submit a blog post), this time from Links of London.  Closing at 5pm on Thursday 13th February my entry is here.

Links of London - £1000 giveaway!

Links of London – £1000 giveaway!

Never owned anything from Links so keeping fingers and toes crossed.  Would be great to tick off the comping wishlist, and diamonds are a girls best friend!

Cooking competitions I don’t normally venture into, but for this giveaway from Cottage Delights you simply need to state what products will feature on your Valentines menu, and how you will be using them.

I finish as I did last month with an animal themed competition.  Pets at Home are currently looking for stars for their next advert.  As if the incentive to see your beloved pet on TV wasn’t enough, you can also win free food for their lifetime.  Entries can be submitted through their facebook app.  The competition closes on the 3rd March.  I shall upload my entry of William to my facebook page & twitter feed so keep a look out!

Would be great to see your entries to these competitions so feel free to share with me on facebook or twitter, and of course do let me know of any wins.  Happy Comping!

Winspiration: Topshop & #London Experiences; First #Pinterest & #Instagram #Competition #Wins

January has been a busy month for me trying to fit in a number of wins from the festive season.  Last week I had an amazing time at Topshop.  I won a like and share competition on Facebook from a Leeds pub, The Botanist, to attend a personal shopper experience in the new shopping centre there, Trinity Leeds.

I was greeted by fedora wearing Lauren in the chicly styled white leather suite reserved for these appointments.  Champagne in hand I was led to a room which had outfit after outfit specially selected for me, (as I had communicated with Lauren previously my fashion inspirations).  I felt like a celebrity and Lauren was just amazing, she exactly had my style, gave me some useful tips, and picked out key looks for the season to keep me up-to-date in the fashion stakes!  This is why I love my hobby as I don’t think I would have booked in for something like this, but it was really worthwhile and I recommend Lauren without a doubt.

Next I had a completely free night in London, (except for the trainfare to get me there).  Both wins on twitter advent giveaways.  The first being £50 to spend in Gourmet Burger Kitchen, from the N1 centre in Islington.  I love there burgers but sadly as we had to eat later as well, (the hardship), we spent the prize on chips and prosecco.  Must be the northerner in me!  Their sweet potato fries are especially delicious I have to say.

Then for a mad dash on the tube as we headed for Piccadilly Circus.  We walked towards Leicester Square and the venue Cafe de Paris.  I’ve previously enjoyed some fun-filled nights in this establishment, dancing away ’til the early hours.  A well-known nightclub it now opens its doors earlier for cabaret shows throughout the week.  You can watch the show for a very reasonable price, but lucky us had the VIP dining package.  We ate a splendid 3 course meal, shared a bottle of champagne, and had front row seats for the entertaining performance from the London Cabaret Society.  Singers, comedians, burlesque dancers, fire-eaters, magicians and more, if you enjoy something a little risqué this show is definitely for you.  I loved it and what a fabulous night out in London!

Fire Eating at Cafe de Paris, London.

Fire Eating at Cafe de Paris, London.

Next week I have to try to squeeze in taking my car to a local garage for a full valet, it’s the premium service and costs £45 normally so I’m looking forward to having my car just like new!  So with these experiences out-of-the-way I can get on with winning some more to enjoy later in the year.  As you can probably tell eating out, and attending events and experiences, are prizes that especially appeal to me.

If you follow me on Facebook you will know I’ve had my first BIG win of the year.  A Surface Pro 2 from Currys PC World, worth £799.  I’m especially pleased with this win as it is my first ever on Pinterest,  an easy repin to win.  It’s inspired me to keep entering competitions on that platform.  Something about firsts this month as I also had my first ever Instagram win, a Calvin Klein iPad case from Superdrug  - for which I simply had to like their status.  From Virgin Experiences I won a meal for 2 with wine at Brasserie Blanc by leaving a comment on a Facebook post.  Very pleased with my wins so far this year totally over £1200.

Don’t agree with voting competitions as a rule – but this one from Expedia has an exceedingly good prize to win a pair of first class plane tickets! Would be much appreciated if you could give me a vote, (and if you enter please comment below and I’ll return the favour). Thanks in advance; http://goo.gl/mnsqQF

A nice big win is always inspiring, thanks Currys!

The competition is hosted on facebook; https://www.facebook.com/How2bBornLucky/app_143103275748075

Normally I use the Rafflecopter app to allow a random winner to be drawn, but on this occasion I’ve decided to trial Woobox – I’d be grateful for your feedback as entrants as to which app you prefer.  Please let me know in the comments section below.

Creative #Competitions I’m entering this month! Jan 2014

I found at the end of last year I turned into a very lazy comper, sticking mainly to facebook and twitter competitions which took just a moment to enter.  Not that I will be stopping that as I’ve had some great wins, but I wanted to go back to doing more involved and fun competitions too.  The kind that really got me hooked on this fabulous hobby almost 15 years ago.

Pinterest is something I’ve been aware of but never used to its full potential, so I’ve been having practice over Christmas, and now I’m looking for competitions on there with low entries.  This year I’m especially interested in any prizes of furniture, home decor, household goods, etc. as I wish to completely revamp my property.   Thats why this competition to win a £9000 new bedroom from Furniture Village really caught my eye!

http://www.furniturevillage.co.uk/magazine/Competitions/New-Year-New-Bedroom.aspx

You can have multiple entries but you need to submit each individually with a new board.

I came up with my first bedroom idea centred around the theme of Hollywood glamour, you can view my entry here.  I submitted this on the 9th Jan and then I was a little disheartened as on the Furniture Village facebook page their resident blogger released a post entitled Hollywood glamour on the 10th!  I had a feeling this might prevent me from winning as the judges might think I hadn’t had my own idea so I came up with 2 further entries.  My second entry, submitted on the 16th Jan, was all about the perfect bedroom for peace and quiet and can be viewed here.  Finally on the 18th Jan I submitted my seaside bedroom theme found here.  It was time consuming entering this competition, I estimate around an hour to complete each board as I was really looking for the right pieces, but the prize is of such a high value I felt it was worth the effort.  Fingers crossed!

The closing date for the competition is 20th January 2014 so be quick to get your entries in.  Feel free to share with me your boards too.

Another Pinterest competition here with Next to win 3 x £100 Gift Cards.

Here is my entry: http://www.pinterest.com/MeSueYouWho/new-year-new-you/

And now for some photo competitions……….

I’m not sure photo competitions are altogether ‘creative’ but I’ve found just that little bit of extra effort involved can reduce the number of entries.  Although this one from Topshop just because of who they are will undoubtedly be very popular.  But as I love my not so little William I thought I couldn’t miss out on this opportunity for him to have his image on a pair of socks, (and the pets owner also gets a £250 gift card)!

http://insideout.topshop.com/2014/01/is-your-pet-the-next-topshop-sock-star

To enter, simply tweet or Instagram a picture of your pet @Topshop with the hashtag #TopPets by 26th January at midnight.  This is the image I entered of William, I’m guessing it might not be ‘kooky’ enough for Topshop but he wasn’t in dressing up mood whilst I was wanting to enter!

WillyBillyBaby

I spotted another pet photo competition with Pets At Home so thought I’d make double use of the photo while I was at it.  You do need to be a VIP club member, the winning prize is a £25 gift voucher, and it closes on January 31st.

https://www.facebook.com/notes/pets-at-home/facebook-vip-pet-of-the-month-competition/10153286884000372

And my final competition for this post I haven’t actually entered yet, I’m pondering how I’ll persuade a friend to join me in dressing up as a man as its really a fabulous prize………  but it requires a ‘bromance’ photo!  Send in your pics before the 13th February for the chance to win a VIP experience to the England v Ireland Legends match on 21st February at The Stoop.

Would be great to see your entries to these competitions so feel free to share with me on facebook or twitter, and of course do let me know of any wins.  Happy Comping!

Winspiration: Makeover @FruitionSalonS2, Cabaret Tickets, Champagne & a New Bag!

I found your comments on my New Years Resolutions post really inspiring, so I decided it might be a nice feature of the blog to share some of my wins.  I won’t bore you with them all but once or twice a month I’ll send a winspiration!

Towards the end of last year I was lucky to win a competition on twitter from a beauty salon in Sheffield.  It was a simple RT & Follow, the prize was for a hair makeover, full set of nails, and a meal and cocktails at a restaurant.  I wanted to write about this lovely win from Fruition Salon, City Road, Sheffield as it goes to show, as I always find, how accommodating and helpful prize promotors generally are.

Firstly it took me ages to book in the hair & beauty part of the prize as I was overseas for a month, I changed dates on several occasions.  Secondly I was really struggling to get the restaurant part booked in.  But always patient and helpful with me the staff at Fruition got me booked in last Saturday, and kindly offered as I was unable to take the meal and cocktails, to give me some goodies instead!

My hair was done by the very warm and friendly Kerri.  As I opted not to have a colour she kindly gave me a deep conditioning treatment which my hair was very pleased to receive in these cold winter months.  Next I had my nails done and I really felt very spoilt, everyone making a fuss of me and making me feel nothing would be too much.  Just as I was about to leave there were a few nudges and winks……  and I was presented with a bottle of wine, (never fails to make a girl smile)……. and a gift box full of goodies from Lush.  It was a great day!  All the staff at Fruition, both in salon and running the promotion were ever professional.  Here I am very pleased with my prize:

Fruition often run competitions over social media, and infact there is one on their facebook page now, so if you live in Sheffield I’m sure they’d be pleased if you give them a like and/or follow:

I have now also had my first wins in 2014.  4 Cabaret tickets & a bottle of champagne to any friday or saturday performance at the Cafe de Paris, London.  This comes in very handy as I’m in London to visit friends this month.  (I had that in mind when I entered the comp)!  It was again a RT & follow on twitter.  On facebook I did a like and share competition and won a lovely new bag from the Camouflage company as pictured below.  So a prize haul of over £100 already, I’m feeling 2014 is going to be a lucky year!

Bag from Camouflage Company

I’d love to hear from you…….  how many wins have you had so far in 2014?

#Competition Terms / #Comping Definitions / #Comper Acronyms

When I first started out entering competitions, almost 15 years ago now, the focus was on postal competitions rather than the web.  There was a lot of terminology that went with the hobby, and still is!  I was a little bamboozled to say the least.  So, for any newbies out there here is a quick guide to some common competition terms you may encounter, along with their definitions.

  • Comper – An individual who enters competitions
  • Comping – The (some might say) art of entering competitions
  • Professional Comper – The Press tend to use this term for very successful compers
  • AIOE – All In One Envelope (a little extinct now but back in the day you would enter multiple competitions from one magazine, for example, by putting all entries in one envelope, isn’t the www a magical thing)!
  • CD – Closing Date
  • DTT – Day Time Telephone
  • E/F – Entry Form
  • FB – Facebook
  • Follow & RT – in reference to a competition on twitter indicating you should Follow the company or individual hosting the giveaway, & RT the competition tweet
  • FPD – Free Prize Draw
  • Like & Share – in reference to a competition on facebook indicating you should Like the page which is hosting the competition & Like & Share the competition post
  • LWE – Long White Envelope (those were lovely days when the postie brought more than bills)!
  • NPN – No Purchase Necessary
  • OOM – Order Of Merit
  • PC – Postcard
  • POP – Proof Of Purchase
  • PPE – Plain Paper Entry
  • SAE – Self Addressed Envelope
  • STD – Spot The Difference
  • TXT – Texting competition ie. Text to Win
  • WEM – Winning E-Mail (more of these please comping fairy)!
  • WTC – Winning Telephone Call

Comping is a hobby which can be very time consuming, but also extremely rewarding.  I sometimes feel I need an assistant though to help me get through all the ones I want to enter!

New Years Resolutions 2014 & Wins from 2013

My New Years Resolutions are very simple this year:

1.  To get this blog up and running properly, (after 2 years in the thought process)!

2.  To dedicate more time to comping & enter more creative competitions.

3.  To keep a spreadsheet of all my wins.

4.  To be happy & lucky.

To achieve all of these things I am going to need to focus and it starts now……..

focus

When I started the blog last year I asked you, in this post:

http://how2bbornlucky.com/2013/05/23/210513-210514-prize-log-entry-1/

To guess how many prizes I would win in a year.  I had estimates ranging from 18 to 365, but in general most people felt I would win 52 times – or once per week.  I was very bad and didn’t keep up the log, (or blog), as promised, (hence New Years Resolutions)!  So yesterday I went through old emails, facebook messages and twitter mentions.

I found I had won 28 prizes totally a value of £3180.

This isn’t a great amount compared to some of my previous years but I am pleasantly surprised.  Remembering I only started the blog in May and had comped very little in the early part of the year, I also spent 2 months overseas during this time, so 28 wins is really for 6 months moderate comping.  I’m very happy, (but will still seek to improve this year)!  It also shows my readers have great guess work as around 52 wins for the year would have probably been right.

As I mentioned in my original post I don’t enter anything and everything.  I do go for the prizes I want.  Often I go in for easy to enter competitions on facebook and twitter but I will look for ones with very low entries.  Infact 2 of the facebook competitions I won this year I knew I was going to win……. as I was the only entrant!  But definately this year I would like to focus more on creative comping, again looking for those low entry competitions thereby increasing your chances to win.

My two biggest wins last year were the trip to London with £500 spending money from Nestle Bueno, and a Caldesi cookery weekend in the Cotswolds worth £1000.  I found I was busy coming up to Christmas so didn’t do much except twitter competitions but had a great run winning Ringside seats at a Boxing Match, Lunch & a Falconry experience, £40 Wagamama Vouchers, £50 GBK Vouchers, a Topshop Personal Shopping Experience and much more!

I have yet to have my first win of the year but I do have my spreadsheet all ready to record it when it does happen and of course I shall be sharing my wins.  It is really great to keep a record of your wins so you can look back and cheer yourself up in those lean times.  Wishing you all a very happy and lucky 2014.

I’d love to hear how many wins you had in 2013?

Competition: Win 3 x Pairs of False Eyelashes rrp£14

No wins for me today, so I thought it would be rather nice for me to launch the blog with a competition for you guys!  (I also wanted to see if I could get my head around rafflecopter).  The Competition prize is 3 x Pairs of False Eyelashes rrp£14 for one lucky winner.  To enter the competition please click on the link below. (It is also possible to enter from the app on Facebook, however, all entries will go into the same ‘pot’ so don’t worry which way you choose).

PLEASE NOTE! Just a little word of warning, I will be checking that the winner has completed all the tasks as specified! If the tasks have not been completed, I’m afraid your entry will be void. I have set you a small number of tasks to complete in order to accumulate entries into the draw, an additional entry is available every day when you ‘tweet’ about the competition.

This link will take you straight to where you need to be;  a Rafflecopter giveaway

Lovely lashes worth £14 - enter now!

Lovely lashes worth £14 – enter now!

This competition is unsponsored and will close at Midnight on Sunday 2nd June.  The winner will be announced within 48 hours following this date.  Be quick!  Just one week to get your entries in.

Rafflecopter is a widgit that allows you to run a competition and a truly ‘random’ winner be drawn.  I like it when I see people using rafflecopter as it takes away the human element of selection, (it is also against Facebook t&c’s to run a like and share competition).

I am using the free version of Rafflecopter (come on, I’ve just started the blog)! and sad to say that means you can’t enter the giveaway from your mobile as the ‘free’ technology doesn’t allow it.  So email yourself a little reminder now, go on then, NOW!  Have you made yourself a reminder?  And then you will remember to visit again from your laptop or pc to enter the competition there.

Good luck!
